Herniated Disc

Herniated Disc Treatment at Bracken Family Chiropractic

Are you experiencing arm or leg pain along with numbness or weakness? Do you notice pain in your back, arms, or legs when you sneeze or cough? These are signs of a possible herniated disc. Unfortunately, as you age, you become more at risk of this issue. Fortunately, at Bracken Family Chiropractic & Massage in Orange Park, our chiropractor can determine if you have a herniated or bulging disc and provide a treatment plan that targets the root cause of your condition.

.

What Is a Herniated Disc?

Your discs consist of a rubbery outer shell known as the annulus. Inside, you have a gel-like substance known as the nucleus pulposus. When the annulus has a tear due to an injury, aging, or a combination of both, the nucleus pulposus seeps through the tear and places pressure on the nearby nerves and soft tissue.

Herniated Disc Symptoms

Patients often experience symptoms of weakness, numbness, tingling, pain, or a burning sensation from the contents of your disc pushing on the nerves and soft tissue. These symptoms may appear right near the location or extend through the extremities near the location. For instance, the most common location for a herniated disc is in your lower back. When this occurs, patients experience pressure on the sciatic nerve, causing nerve-related symptoms that extend throughout their legs. On the other hand, patients with a herniated disc in their neck or top portion of their back can cause symptoms that affect their arms.

Difference Between Herniated and Bulging Discs

A bulging disc and a herniated disc are often confused with one another, or the terms are used interchangeably. However, these are two different conditions. Herniated disc symptoms tend to be more apparent than bulging disc symptoms. In patients who have a bulging disc, the annulus is weaker than normal, which is why the disc bulges. While a herniated disc results from a crack in the outer, causing the inner layer to leak out, a bulging disc only involves issues with the outer layer.
